How do I get my voicemails returned?

Rating: +0

Positive Negative

Great question. I recently interviewed a director of procurement at a large, $500 million company. When I asked him which voicemails he returns he said,”Simple, if I don’t know you, I won’t return your call.” What that told me is no matter how great your message, no matter how much value you leave in that message, you’re not getting a call back. Ironically enough, we’ve found that less than 3% of voicemails we leave at the middle management level and below get returned. Consequently, almost 15% of our voicemails to senior level executives get returned. So my recommendation is three-fold:

1. Call up the organization
2. Use an integrated marketing approach to attract, attain, and retain new clients. Part of that approach includes building awareness and presenting value up front to the prospect
3. Don’t leave voicemails. Instead, put that contact on a call rotation and plan to keep calling until they pick up. But remember, be politely persistent as one of my clients called it; calling every hour is a NO-NO!
